12 June 2022, Oslo – The Philippine Embassy, in cooperation with ´Kalayaan Norge´, held back-to-back events to commemorate the 124th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence. ´Kalayaan Norge´ is composed of Filipino volunteers, most of whom represent their different Filipino organizations in Oslo.
On 4 June 2022, a formal Gala Night was held at the centrally-located and newly-renovated Clarion Hotel The Hub in Oslo. The Gala Night was well attended with around 250 guests gracing the event in their formal wear, including their beautiful Filipiniana gowns and dapper Barongs.
During the Gala Night, Oslo-based talents performed Filipino songs and folk dances, which not only to entertained the Filipinos, Norwegians, and Filipino-Norwegians in the audience, but also reminded them of their Philippine culture and heritage.
A week later, on 11 June 2022, more than a thousand Filipinos gathered and celebrated the Philippine Independence Day at the St. Hanshaugen Park in Oslo. The celebration started with a Catholic mass followed by an entire day of impressive and fun-filled performances from Filipino singers and dancers all over Norway, which again showcased the talent of Filipinos wherever they may be.
One of the highlights of the event was the performance of Ms. Bela Padilla, a London-based Filipina actress, who visited the Filipino Community in Oslo, through The Filipino Channel-Europe (TFC Europe) and The Filipino Channel-Norway (TFC Norway).
Filipinos who attended the St. Hanshaugen Park celebration also enjoyed various Filipino dishes sold by the different booths, and the contests and raffle draw organized by Kalayaan Norge and the event sponsors.
Embassy personnel joined in on the fun with its sari-sari store themed-booth and distributed Philippine tourism materials and activity books for kids. Filipinos who visited the Embassy booth were encouraged to answer trivia questions on Philippine history, and were rewarded with Filipino snacks as prizes.
In his messages delivered on the Gala Night and the St. Hanshaugen park celebration, Ambassador Enrico Fos recognized the important role of the Filipino community in Norway, not only for their significant number as a migrant community, but also for their valuable work as professionals and skilled workers in Norway. In line with the Kalayaan 2022 theme of Pagsuong sa Hamon ng Panibagong Bukas, Ambassador Fos challenged the Filipino community to make their presence count in Norway, and continue to support each other, not only to survive, but to excel, both as individuals and as a united community.
