25 January 2020, Oslo- The Saturday afternoon saw a huge crowd of Filipinos shouting, singing and dancing with cries of “Pit Señor” Organized by the Sacred Heart Filipino Chaplaincy—Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Feast of Santo Niño 2020 (Sinulog) was an admirable display  of collaboration among various Filipino community organizations in Norway.

Hermanas from Horten Filippinsk Kultur Forening, in their Filipiniana dresses and holding the image of the Child Jesus,  led the festival with the traditional “sinulog”, a prayer dance offered to the Holy Child on its feast day every third Sunday of January.   The Filipino Choir of Drammen provided the music at the Holy Mass at the St. Joseph Church in Oslo, which was officiated by Father Jose Dumandan, the Filipino Chaplain in Oslo and graced by Father  Pål Bratbak, the Parish Priest of Oslo.

After the mass, the afternoon celebration then continued at the Frelsesarmeen Hoverkvarter (The Salvation Army Headquarters).  The Programme showed that Filipino talents abound in Norway! Several dance and song presentations were presented  by different members of the Filipino community. A young girl named Etiene wowed the audience with her powerful voice.   The music played by the young Mañago Brothers encouraged the audience to stand up and dance.  Disco dancing by the Hermanas of Horten showed the Filipinos’ passion for dancing does not diminish with age.  The audience stayed until the early evening, with the programme  made more exciting  by the drawing   of numerous  consolation and major raffle prizes.

Ambassador Jocelyn Batoon-Garcia commended all the organizations and personalities who have made Sinulog 2020 in Oslo a success. She said that the festival was a good beginning  for this year as the Philippines has started its countdown for the 2021 Quincentennial Celebration commemorating the 500 years of the victory of Lapu-Lapu at the Battle of Mactan, the Philippine part in the circumnavigation of the planet, and the beginning of Christianity in the country.

The Philippine Embassy in Oslo joined the Filipino community in Norway in looking forward to the Feast of the Sto. Niño 2021, as the Filipino community in Drammen enthusiastically accepted the task of hosting the festival next year. End
